Evan Alicuben | Hilo, HI
To improve emergency response
problems
for local senior citizens, Evan
created a
project to install Personal
Emergency
Dialers into homes of
seniors. He obtained
funding for the
units, coordinated the installation,
and received a grant to secure
$10,000 to
aid the elderly in his area. |
Alisa Grant | Lakeland, FL
Through volunteer work, Alisa learned
that
Braille books for visually impaired
children
rarely contain textured pictures
to follow the
story. With the help of
other high school students,
she has
published a series of 25
original
storybooks with touchable illustrations
for blind students in her community. |
Alexander Gribov | Mayfield Heights, OH
Alexander moved to the United States at
age four, but grew up hearing about the
oppression his family faced in the Soviet
Union. Inspired, he started Tolerance
Seminars for his school. “By speaking
honestly
as a peer,” he says, “I’ve
witnessed
the transformation in students
who formerly
accepted racism as the
norm.” |
Ashley Gunn | Brandon, MS
Moved by the poverty she saw on a trip
to Africa, Ashley created SAIF, a nonprofit
charity benefiting the inner-city poor in
her
own community. SAIF purchases
abandoned
houses that students repair
and remodel,
then helps poor families
purchase the
homes at rates they can
afford.. |
Laura Huppert | Piedmont, CA
As a volunteer “Reading Buddy,” Laura
discovered the kids she helped had no
formal introduction to science. “I wanted
to give them the opportunity to
experience
science in a fun, yet
educational manner,”
she says. Laura
designed experiments and
lessons for
the students, received a grant
for her
project, and even recruited other
teens
to help teach. |
Geneva Johnson | Bronx, NY
In response to the gangs, drugs and
crime
in her neighborhood, Geneva
started “Bring
It On,” a nonprofit for
young people that
encourages
community service and civic
engage-
ment. “Our mission is to change the
world and inspire youth to social action,”
she says. www.bringitonnyc.org |

Alyssa Allende Motz | Highlands Ranch, CO
Alyssa founded CHAMPS, a community
service club for kids like her who have
school requirements — and the desire
—
to do volunteer work. CHAMPS
matches
students with service projects
that
interest them and gives them
opportunities
to leave their own
community and
go out into “the real
world” in a group. |
Daniel Nally | Westwood, MA
Daniel created Turkeys 4 America after
hearing that the Greater Boston Food
Bank would be 5,000 turkeys short at
Thanksgiving. His program became the
food bank’s largest donor in its first
year. Today, it’s a nationwide program,
providing turkeys to families across the
country. www.turkeys4america.org |
Michael Puente Jr. | Kenner, LA
Just as Michael was producing the
first
issue of his school newspaper,
Hurricane
Katrina hit. Michael relocated
temporarily
to Houston, where his
school day started
at 3:30 p.m. to
accommodate students
from New
Orleans. Michael, however,
arrived at
school at 7:30 a.m. to
produce and
edit his paper online --
and kept the
kids from his original
school connected. |
Logan Skelley | Joplin, MO
Logan created “Canned Heat” to help
needy families pay heating bills. He
began by recycling cans, but soon
expanded his program and recruited
others.
Just by collecting cans, Logan
has
donated thousands of dollars to
help
people manage fuel bills. |
